“You shall also count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day when you brought in the sheaf of the wave offering; there shall be seven complete Sabbaths. You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall present a new grain offering to the Lord.”
(Leviticus 23:15-16)
Seven “Sabbaths”, or the counting of the seven Sabbaths between the Sabbath after Passover to Shavuot (Pentecost), is a period of fifty days known as the ‘Counting of the Omer.’ An omer was a unit of measure used in the ancient world for trade and commerce, and it was also used in the various Temple systems for sacrifices. According to the Bible, on the day after the Sabbath after the Passover (the 1st day of the week, Sunday) there was to be a wave offering consisting of sheaves of grain from the field. As new sprouting sheaves of barley became visible in the fields, people would cut some of them down and bring them into the Temple as an offering. The High Priest, on behalf of the people of Israel, waved two of these sheaves before the Lord for the people to be accepted. Leviticus 23:17 makes a strange connection between the sheaf/wave offering and the acceptance of the people of Israel. You would think the wave offering would be for the Lord to bless the crops and the harvest, but instead, the wave offering is for the people to be accepted. This odd ceremony is part of the Feast of the First Fruits, or in other words the Feast of the First Offerings from the Harvest to Come.
At Shavuot, in the days after Y’shua’s Resurrection, we read in the Book of Acts, Chapter 2, that the Spirit was given on this day, and His being “poured out” upon men was seen as the fulfillment… “About three thousand souls were added….” This is surely a Physical Sign of a Spiritual Truth! Because God accepted the wave offering of the First Fruits, Y’shua, the first disciples saw the blessings of the first harvest ~ those Jewish men, women and even proselytes ~ each taking their new found faith in the Messiah and then moving on to labour in God’s field for the long hot summer. So it is at this time in Israel, at Shavuot/Pentecost, right before the long hot summer, when they physically gather in the crops of this first harvest and look toward the second more bountiful harvest in the upcoming Fall Season right before the Feast of Sukkot/Tabernacles.
Working towards this second harvest is the heart’s desire of everyone here at LOMMI. Our workers desire to see a bountiful harvest once again among the Jewish people. This year, I ask that you stand firmly with us in prayer and financial support, so we may continue to expand our efforts and reach even more with the Good News that Messiah has come. It is our hope and prayer that as you partner with us in this endeavor to spread the Good News among the Jewish people, that God would richly bless you in all things.
